DESKTOP PUBLISHING

ParlExperts produces translated materials with the same appearance as the original.

Desktop Publishing (DTP) refers to the skill and art of visually composing documents in an electronic format for presentation or printing. ParlExperts provides specialized multilingual DTP services to adapt documents created by your creative services department or agency of record for multilingual use. The challenge is to produce translated materials with the same appearance as the original without compromising content.

Our experienced professional desktop publishers work in different scripts and languages using popular desktop publishing and multimedia applications, such as Adobe InDesign, Illustrator and Photoshop, as well as QuarkXpress, PageMaker, FrameMaker and other applications in both Macintosh and PC environments. They are adept at adjusting typefaces, spacing and other layout components of graphics, diagrams, PowerPoint slides, and illustrations.

During the strict quality-control phase, a native speaker of the target language, an in-house proofreader, and the graphics specialist work side by side to proofread the document, ensure compliance with foreign-language typesetting conventions, and most importantly, to guarantee that the foreign-language text is intact and properly laid out.

The artwork is signed off by the original translator, the graphics specialist, and the senior project manager to ensure consistency of layout between languages and adherence to client instructions.

Challenges in Multilingual DTP:

Arabic/Hebrew:
Right-to-left languages require special applications, as well as a thorough understanding of the challenges of recreating your documents for Middle Eastern audiences. ParlExperts has the expertise and resources to transform your documents into mirror image Hebrew or Arabic layouts while maintaining your corporate image and the style of the source documents.

East Asian Languages: In the case of non-Roman, East Asian scripts, such as Chinese, Japanese, Thai, Vietnamese and Korean, we have extensive experience and the right applications to recreate documents in these languages. Our DTP specialists can identify fonts to match the look and feel of your source documents. For clients who do not have double-byte computing capabilities, we can deliver text in Encapsulated PostScript format (EPS).

Expansion/Contraction Between Languages: One particular challenge to Multilingual DTP that many clients do not expect is the relative contraction or expansion between languages. This can cause pages laid out in other languages to look either empty or cluttered as compared to the source. Special attention to font sizing, kerning and placement must be made to compensate for these variations and achieve a visually pleasing result. For example, Spanish and French translations typically require between 15 and 20 percent more space than English. We will adjust typefaces, spacing and other layout components to deliver consistent foreign-language versions of your documents.

File Formats: We can deliver files and digital artwork in their original file formats and in addition file formats such as PDF, EPS, TIFF, or Postscript which are independent of fonts and applications.
